SURVEY REVEALS LIKES, DISLIKES ABOUT POWELL

The Delaware Gazette - July 27, 2010

Powell residents have graded the city on an array of issues and the results are clear: Powell is an outstanding place to live, but a few things could be better.

City council learned about the results of the 2010 Powell Community Survey this week. About 400 registered Powell voters were randomly selected and called by an independent public opinion research company in late June and early July to conduct the survey. The polling, which was also conducted in 2008, provides a representative sample of how all Powell residents feel about issues.

The 2010 survey found residents are pleased with most all aspects about life in Powell, which is similar to what the last survey showed:

• Residents overwhelmingly believe Powell is headed in the right direction. Seventy-nine percent of people said they feel this is true, which is up two percent from the previous survey.

• The city’s small-town atmosphere continues to be Powell’s greatest asset, meaning the city is safe, family oriented, pedestrian friendly and not overly developed. Sixty-one percent of people said these are the things they like most about living in Powell, which is up three percent from the last survey.

• Overall resident satisfaction with city services remains high. Residents are most pleased with Powell’s police protection and snow removal service, both of which nine out of 10 people said they are satisfied with.

• Overall resident satisfaction with city council remains high. Two out of three people said they are satisfied with council’s work. Compared to the previous survey, the results showed a notable uptick in satisfaction with how city council manages money as well as listens to the concerns of residents.

The 2010 survey showed Powell residents are less satisfied with a few aspects about the community:

• Traffic continues to be the top complaint about Powell. Thirty-six percent of people said they would like to see less traffic in the city, which is up three percent from the last survey.

• Fewer residents are pleased with the city’s parks, open spaces and bike paths. Fifty-six percent of people said they are very satisfied with these things, which is down seven percent from the previous survey.

• Fewer residents are happy with the city’s efforts to revitalize downtown Powell, citing traffic and parking issues as the main reasons for this. Twenty-six percent of people said they are very satisfied with work to revitalize downtown, which is down 14 percent from the last survey.

• Fewer residents believe Powell is an exceptional place to live. Forty-seven percent of people said they feel this way about Powell, which is down five percent from the previous survey.

The poll, conducted by Columbus-based Saperstein Associates, has a margin of error of plus-or-minus 4.9 percentage points. Pollster Marty Saperstein said it won’t be until 2012, when Powell conducts its third survey, that trends in public opinion will become clear. Still, he advised city council members not to brush off changes in public opinion that are already beginning to show, no matter how small they might be.
